When the flute holders are used with just the head joint, students can experiment with finding the “sweet spot” or the exact place where the lips go on the embouchure hole in order to produce a characteristic sound. The holders keep the head joint in position for the student for their height and the student can roll the head joint forward and backward to find the correct spot for a characteristic sound.

From there, students can practice moving toward and away from the head joints and finding the “sweet spot” over and over again so that muscle memory can be achieved. (I have used the analogy of knowing where the light switch is in the dark and being able to turn it on and off without thinking about it.)
Once the student has established where the “sweet spot” is on the head joint, the student will no longer need the holders for this purpose.
The holders can also be used for the entire flute to establish correct hand position. When students have to hold the flute by themselves in the beginning, it can be an awkward experience. The weight of the instrument combined with having to hold it transversely can keep younger students from having correct hand position. When the holders are correctly attached to a music stand, the students can easily practice correct left and right hand positions, easily fix hand position problems, as well as receive immediate feedback from their teachers. Since the holders slightly elevate the flute, corrections and good habits are more readily reinforced.
As students progress on the instrument, students can learn how to finger different notes on the instrument as well as more complex fingering combinations with the use of the flute holder pro. I have even used the flute holder pro with high school students when working on complex finger technique!

As a flute and band clinician, I have used the flute holder pro instead of a flute stand that is placed on the floor. The flute holder pro is easier to use in a clinic because it is more readily available in conjunction with a conductor stand. It is also safer and easier to keep away from student traffic.
